Mommy Wars: Could WAHMs Be the Middle Ground?
The Mommy Wars have been going on since women could go to work, but now there is a new faction . . . could WAHMs be the happy medium?
The Mommy Wars were made popular by a best-selling book by the same name and a show on Oprah that pitted the two sides against each other. What is the Mommy War? It’s the unpleasant war between stay at home moms and working mothers.
Stay at home moms often feel that they are belittled and looked down on for giving up their career or choosing not to attempt one and working mothers find that they are treated badly for not staying at home with their children. What if there were some middle ground?
The truth is, work at home moms are the middle ground. And not one mom who works at home will tell you that it is easy, but it does put to rest the criticism . . . at least for the most part. This is the one way that the two sides can come together at last. You stay home with the kids full-time, but you also work, it sounds like the perfect solution, right?
Wrong. Working from home can be one of the most challenging situations mothers will ever have to face. A mother who goes out to work each day gets a break from child care issues and can focus on getting her job done, knowing that she will return to family life at the end of the day. A stay at home mom is home with the kids, dealing with dirty diapers, fighting and housework that never gets finished because the kids are constantly messing the place up.
The work at home mom has all the situations listed above to deal with. Trying to work with children bickering, a baby crying, a toddler wanting to sit on your lap, and the dishes waiting to be done is very hard and requires supreme organization and a lot of patience. While this is certainly “the best of both worlds†in light of the Mommy Wars, it is still not ideal by any stretch of the imagination. Yet hundreds, even thousands of moms make it work every day.
If you want to get off the battlefield, no matter which side you’re on, consider working from home. Perhaps your existing job could be done remotely, or you may need to search online for a new job. As a stay at home mom, you might feel that you have no skills, but if you can type, you can take on a lot of different positions, or start your own business! The possibilities are truly limited only by your imagination.
Taking the middle ground on the Mommy Wars is not easy. But neither is taking either side!
